New Project Period – Funded by the Berlin University Alliance

In February 2022, GenderOpen entered the next project period: funded by the Berlin University Alliance (BUA), GenderOpen can be consolidated and further developed over the next four years.

The tasks within the framework of BUA funding include, on the one hand, the internationalization of the publishing service and the corresponding expansion of content acquisition. On the other hand, the need for an open-access primary and secondary publishing service for PhD theses and other types of documents will be investigated. If need be, this service will be developed. Furthermore, it is planned to link and integrate the existing Open Access projects in gender studies, with regard to an adaptable concept of “openness” for similarly complex and diversely organized scientific fields. Finally, an application for third-party funding for the further development of the project should also be submitted.

More than 2000 Items on GenderOpen

GenderOpen now offers free full-text access to over 2000 publications – mostly openly licensed and therefore reusable in various ways. GenderOpen now obtains a large part of its content directly from publishers and journal editors – our cooperation partners.  Moreover, GenderOpen publishes many texts digitally for the first time. Finally, authors themselves are invited to upload their publications directly to GenderOpen. This is now even easier: publishing agreements can be submitted digitally. Funded by the Berlin University Alliance, intensive work has been done in recent months to restructure the workflows around GenderOpen in order to be able to access contributions even faster in the future.

First Project Period Finalized Successfully

The cost-neutral extension of the DFG project expired on October 31, 2019. Until the decision on further funding in a larger project context is made, content acquisition can only be carried out to a small extent and submissions cannot be processed immediately. We will inform you about the progress of the project right here..

Open Gender Platform is online

The GenderOpen team congratulates to the launch of the Open Gender Platform! The Open Gender Platform contains tools for publishing, information on technologies, business models and quality assurance specifically for open-access publishing in the gender studies. GenderOpen contributes to the platform with the GenderOpen subject headings. The Open Gender Platform is funded as part of the ideas competition for innovative Open Access projects by the BMBF.

GenderOpen Reaches 1500 Publications

We reach another milestone and crack the mark of 1500 publications – a great success of our acquisition work! Our strategy of extensive networking with publishers, editors and especially the authors is paying off. Almost all publications on GenderOpen can not only be downloaded free of charge, but also be freely reused. GenderOpen consistently implements real Open Access, even for dual publications! We thank all authors, cooperation partners and supporters!

The best thing: GenderOpen continues to grow!

GenderOpen Receives the DINI Certificate

The GenderOpen repository receives the 2016 Certificate for Open Access Repositories and Publication Services from DINI (Deutsche Initiative für Netzwerkinformation)! The Certificate is the central quality seal for trustworthiness, sustainability and quality of Open Access repositories and publication services in German-speaking countries. GenderOpen meets all the requirements of the DINI criteria catalog, for example with regard to the organizational structure, the user interface or the technical infrastructure. With the DINI certificate, GenderOpen achieves a central milestone and is excellently set up for future tasks. In addition to the minimum requirements, GenderOpen also meets the vast majority of non-obligatory DINI recommendations.

GenderOpen in the META Catalogue

From now on, the publications in the GenderOpen repository are also findable in the META catalogue of i.d.a., the umbrella organization of German language lesbian/women’s libraries, archives and documentation centers! The META catalogue is the central search tool for the collections of about forty institutions in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Italy and Switzerland. For a DFG-funded infrastructure project, this link to self-organized projects is unique!

GenderOpen is a Success Story

The Berlin University Alliance (BUA), consisting of the three major Berlin universities including the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, promotes projects in which the institutions already collaborate successfully. GenderOpen is now one of these success stories !

In the area of digitization and infrastructure, GenderOpen is implementing the guiding BUA principle of bundling institutional strengths excellently. By operating the GenderOpen repository, the institutions involved also make a contribution to Open Access in research and teaching far beyond Berlin.

On December 4, 2017, State Secretary Barbara König ceremonially pressed the green button to launch the repository.
